The Temple
A Temple Dedicated to Healing
Vaitheeswaran Koil is home to a temple traditionally dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Vaidyanathar, or Vaitheeswaran — meaning “Lord of Medicine.” According to tradition, Shiva took this form to heal deities and sages, including tending to the wounds of his son, Lord Muruga.
The temple is traditionally understood to have been built during the Chola period, with inscriptions suggesting the site holds significance older still. The sanctum houses Vaitheeswaran, his consort Thaiyalnayaki, and Nandi, the sacred bull.

The Angaraka Connection
Vaitheeswaran Koil is also traditionally associated with Angaraka, the planet Mars, one of the nine Navagrahas in Hindu astrology. Devotees traditionally visit this shrine seeking to ease the challenging influence Mars is believed to hold in one's astrological chart.
This Navagraha association sits alongside the temple's healing tradition, and together they shape the spiritual character of the town.

Siddhamirtham and the Temple Tank
The temple is home to Siddhamirtham, a sacred water tank traditionally believed to hold healing properties. Alongside it, the temple complex traditionally recognises a number of additional water sources, each associated with its own traditional significance.
